📰 Mamata Banerjee Slams ECI Over Non-Publication of SIR Supplementary List, Calls It ‘Murder of Democracy’

In a sharp attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI), Mamata Banerjee has criticized the poll body for not making the first supplementary list of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls public. The West

Bengal Chief Minister termed the move a “murder of democracy” and raised serious concerns over transparency and accountability in the electoral process.

Addressing the media, Banerjee alleged that the non-availability of the supplementary list deprives citizens and political stakeholders of their right to verify additions or deletions in voter rolls. She warned that such “arbitrary exercise of power” could erode public trust in democratic institutions.

“The people of this country will soon demand answers. Democracy cannot function in secrecy,” Banerjee said, emphasizing that electoral roll revisions must remain transparent and accessible to ensure free and fair elections.

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process is a crucial exercise undertaken by the ECI to update voter lists by adding eligible voters and removing ineligible or duplicate entries. However, opposition leaders have often raised concerns about irregularities and lack of clarity during such revisions.

Banerjee further questioned why the supplementary list, which is typically released for public scrutiny, has not been disclosed this time. She urged the

ECI to immediately publish the list and uphold democratic norms.

Political analysts note that the issue could intensify tensions between the Trinamool Congress and the central authorities, especially ahead of upcoming elections. The controversy has also sparked debate over the independence and functioning of the Election Commission.

As the matter gains traction, all eyes are now on the ECI’s response and whether it will release the supplementary list to address the concerns raised by Banerjee and other opposition voices.
