Man Arrested for Attempted Rape in Gorakhpur; Woman Attacked Inside Her Home

Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh): Police have arrested a man for allegedly barging into the house of a 20-year-old woman, assaulting her and attempting to rape her in the Shahpur area of Gorakhpur, officials said on Monday.

According to the police, the accused has been identified as Rahmat Ali, a resident of the same neighbourhood. The incident reportedly took place on March 5 when the woman was alone at her house.

Police said that the woman’s mother had gone to a nearby neighbour’s house to exchange Holi greetings, leaving the victim by herself at home. Taking advantage of the situation, the accused allegedly entered the house without permission.


In her complaint to the police, the woman stated that Rahmat Ali suddenly forced his way inside the house and began molesting her. She further alleged that he assaulted her and attempted to rape her. The woman resisted and raised an alarm, which alerted people in the neighbourhood.

Hearing her screams, local residents rushed to the spot, following which the accused reportedly fled from the scene. The victim later informed her family

and approached the police to file a formal complaint.


Acting on the complaint, Shahpur police registered a case and launched an investigation. The accused was soon traced and arrested by the police.

Officials said that a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) related to assault, molestation, and attempt to rape. The accused has been taken into custody and further legal proceedings are underway.


Police added that the victim’s statement has been recorded and efforts are being made to collect additional evidence in connection with the case. The investigation is currently ongoing.
