Concerns are mounting across several States as workers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) report being denied work, despite repeated assurances from the Government of India that the scheme remains fully operational.

🌾 Workers Left Without Employment
From Bihar to Rajasthan, thousands of rural workers have claimed that new work allocations have stopped, leaving them without their primary source of income. Many say they have been visiting local पंचायत offices regularly but are being told that no fresh projects are being approved.
For daily wage labourers who depend heavily on MGNREGS, the halt in work has created financial distress and uncertainty, particularly in rural areas where alternative employment options are limited.
⚠️ Confusion at the Ground Level
Adding to the confusion, some district-level officials have reportedly indicated that they were verbally instructed not to initiate new works under the scheme. However, there has been no formal or written directive confirming any discontinuation.
This mismatch between official statements and ground-level implementation has led to:
Delays in job card approvals
Pending wage payments in some areas
Lack of clarity among local administrators
🏛️ Centre’s Stand
The Government of India has maintained that the MGNREGS scheme has not been discontinued and continues to function as per existing guidelines. Officials at the national level have reiterated that funds are being allocated and States are expected to implement the programme effectively.
📉 Impact on Rural Economy
The disruption in MGNREGS work could have broader implications:
Reduced household income in rural communities
Increased migration to urban areas in search of jobs
Slower progress on rural infrastructure projects
Experts warn that prolonged uncertainty could weaken the safety net that MGNREGS provides to millions of vulnerable households.
🔍 Calls for Clarity and Accountability
Activists and rural groups have demanded:
Clear communication from authorities
Immediate resumption of pending works
Transparency in fund allocation and utilisation
