Mohan Bhagwat Bats for Nationwide UCC, Says It Is ‘Essential for Unifying Society’

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has reiterated his support for the implementation of a nationwide Uniform Civil Code (UCC), stating that it is “essential for unifying society” and strengthening national integration.

Addressing a public gathering, Mr. Bhagwat said a common civil code applicable to all citizens, irrespective of religion or community, would promote equality and social harmony. He argued that uniformity in personal laws relating to marriage, inheritance, and adoption would help foster a sense of unity and shared citizenship across the country.

The RSS chief maintained that discussions on the UCC should be conducted in a constructive and inclusive manner, keeping in mind the sensitivities of various communities. He emphasized that the objective of the proposed code is not to target any particular group but to ensure equal rights and responsibilities for all citizens under one legal framework.

When asked about the University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations aimed at curbing caste-based discrimination in higher educational institutions — which have been stayed by the Supreme Court of India — Mr. Bhagwat declined to comment. He said the matter is currently under consideration before the apex court and it would not be appropriate to express views while the issue is sub judice.

The debate around the Uniform Civil Code has gained renewed momentum in recent months, with several political leaders and organisations weighing in on the issue. While proponents argue that it would ensure equality before the law, critics contend that such a move requires broader consultation and consensus-building.

Mr. Bhagwat’s remarks are likely to add fresh impetus to the ongoing national discourse on the UCC, which remains a key subject in India’s socio-political landscape.
