Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve: Tiger MT-7 Shifted to Larger Enclosure Under Rewilding Plan

In a key step towards strengthening its rewilding initiative, authorities at Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve have shifted tigress MT-7 to a larger enclosure to facilitate better adaptation to natural conditions. The move is part of an ongoing effort to stabilise and expand the tiger population in the reserve.

Tranquilisation and Radio-Collaring

Forest officials said MT-7 was safely tranquilised by a team of veterinarians and wildlife experts before being fitted with a radio collar. The tracking device will allow authorities to closely monitor her movements, health, and behavioural patterns.

After the procedure, the tigress was relocated to a 21-hectare enclosure within the reserve. Officials described the operation as smooth and conducted under strict veterinary supervision.

Purpose of the Shift

The larger enclosure is designed to simulate near-wild conditions, enabling the tigress to improve hunting skills and territorial behaviour before being considered for release into the open forest area.

According to forest department officials, the enclosure provides natural vegetation, prey base, and minimal human interference, helping the animal gradually adapt to a freer environment.

Close Monitoring Underway

Authorities confirmed that MT-7’s movements are being monitored round the clock through radio telemetry and ground patrol teams. Her feeding patterns, physical health, and stress levels will be assessed over the coming weeks.

Officials said the rewilding programme aims to ensure that relocated or captive-managed tigers are fully prepared before being introduced into the broader ecosystem of the reserve.

Strengthening Tiger Conservation

Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve has been part of Rajasthan’s broader tiger conservation strategy, which focuses on habitat restoration, prey augmentation, and scientific monitoring. Wildlife experts believe such carefully managed transitions are crucial for improving survival rates and maintaining ecological balance.

Further decisions regarding MT-7’s release into the open forest will be taken based on her adaptation progress and expert evaluation reports.
