Mumbai Mayor Writes to Gujarat CM Requesting Two Pairs of Asiatic Lions for City Zoo

The Mayor of Mumbai, Ritu Tawde, has written a formal letter to Bhupendra Patel, the Chief Minister of Gujarat, requesting the allocation of two pairs of Asiatic lions for the city’s zoo.

Two Pairs of Asiatic Lions

According to civic officials, the request was made to strengthen the wildlife attraction at the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan and Zoo, popularly known as Byculla Zoo. The proposal aims to enhance the zoo’s collection of animals and provide visitors with an opportunity to see the rare Asiatic lions up close.

Proposal for Two Pairs of Lions

In the letter, Mayor Ritu Tawde requested the Gujarat government to consider providing two pairs of Asiatic Lion. These lions are currently found mainly in and around the Gir National Park in Gujarat, which is the only natural habitat of the species in the world.

Officials said the move is intended to promote wildlife awareness and strengthen conservation education through the zoo.

Boost for Zoo Attractions

The Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan and Zoo has undergone several upgrades in recent years, including improved enclosures and better facilities for animals. Bringing Asiatic lions to the zoo is expected to significantly increase visitor interest and tourism.

Civic authorities believe the presence of these iconic animals will help the zoo attract more visitors while also raising awareness about wildlife conservation.

Awaiting Gujarat Government’s Response

The request is currently under consideration by the Gujarat government. If approved, the transfer of lions would be carried out in accordance with wildlife regulations and under the supervision of forest and wildlife authorities.

Officials said that all necessary infrastructure and safety arrangements would be ensured before the animals are brought to Mumbai.

Focus on Conservation

Experts say such exchanges between zoos and wildlife authorities are often carried out as part of conservation and breeding programmes aimed at protecting endangered species.

The final decision on the request will depend on approvals from wildlife authorities and the Gujarat government, which manages the population of Asiatic lions in the state.
