‘My daughter didn’t bow, how can I’: Ankita Bhandari’s parents join mahapanchayat seeking justice

Dehradun: Seeking justice for their daughter, the parents of Ankita Bhandari joined a mahapanchayat demanding strict action against all those involved in the 19-year-old’s murder case. The gathering saw participation from local residents, social activists and members of various organisations, who called for transparency in the investigation and accountability from authorities.

Addressing the gathering, Ankita’s father made an emotional appeal, saying, “My daughter did not bow down. How can I?” He reiterated his resolve to continue the fight until justice is delivered. He also raised concerns over what he described as gaps in the investigation, particularly regarding the alleged “VIP angle” in the case.

Ankita’s father said the probe should focus on identifying the person referred to as the “VIP” in initial reports and statements. He expressed disappointment that recent communications from authorities did not clearly mention progress on this aspect. “The truth must come out. The investigation should not ignore any angle, especially the VIP angle that was discussed earlier,” he said.

Participants at the mahapanchayat demanded a fair and time-bound investigation, urging the government to ensure that no influential individuals are shielded. Several speakers stressed the need for transparency and public disclosure of findings to maintain trust in the justice system.

Ankita Bhandari, a receptionist at a resort in Uttarakhand, was allegedly murdered in 2022. The case had sparked widespread outrage across the state, leading to protests and demands for stringent action against the accused. Authorities had arrested key suspects, and the matter is currently under trial.

At the mahapanchayat, community leaders assured the family of continued support. Protesters also called for stronger safety measures for women and stricter regulations for hospitality establishments in remote areas.

The grieving parents said they would not give up their pursuit of justice. “We want the full truth to come out in court. We will keep fighting,” Ankita’s mother said, echoing the sentiments of those gathered.

The case continues to draw public attention, with activists insisting that justice must not only be done but also be seen to be done.
