Nearly Half of Electoral Dispute Cases Resolved in West Bengal: CEO

The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal has stated that almost half of the cases currently under adjudication related to electoral rolls have been successfully settled, marking significant progress in the ongoing revision and verification process.

According to officials, these cases primarily involve disputes over inclusion and deletion of names from the voters’ list. The CEO noted that sustained efforts by election authorities at the district and booth levels have helped in expediting the resolution process, ensuring greater accuracy and transparency in the electoral rolls.

The official also clarified that electors whose names have been removed or struck off from the rolls are not left without recourse. Such individuals have the right to challenge the decision by approaching the appellate tribunal established in each district. These tribunals are tasked with reviewing claims and objections, providing voters an opportunity to present their case and seek restoration of their names if found eligible.

Election authorities have urged citizens to actively verify their details in the electoral rolls and report any discrepancies. Special drives and awareness campaigns are being conducted to inform voters about the procedures for filing claims, objections, and appeals.

The CEO emphasised that maintaining an accurate and updated electoral roll is crucial for ensuring free and fair elections. Efforts are being made to remove duplicate or ineligible entries while safeguarding the rights of genuine voters.

Officials added that the remaining pending cases are also being processed on a priority basis, with a focus on timely disposal ahead of upcoming electoral exercises. The administration aims to complete the adjudication process well in time to avoid any inconvenience to voters.

The development reflects the Election Commission’s broader push to strengthen electoral integrity and enhance voter confidence in the system, while also ensuring that no eligible voter is disenfranchised.
