The upgraded facility is expected to significantly enhance passenger handling capacity and modernise air travel infrastructure in the region.

Operations to Shift Gradually

According to the Chief Minister, domestic and international flight operations are likely to begin from the new terminal by March. The transition will be carried out in phases to ensure smooth functioning and minimal disruption to passengers.

Airport authorities have indicated that airlines and ground staff are coordinating closely to shift operations seamlessly.

Old Terminal to Become Cargo Hub

Once passenger services fully move to the new facility, the existing terminal building will be repurposed into a dedicated cargo hub. Officials believe this step will strengthen Assam’s logistics and trade capabilities, particularly for exports of perishable goods and regional products.

The development is expected to boost economic activity in the Northeast by improving air freight capacity.

Modern Facilities and Increased Capacity

The new terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati has been designed with modern passenger amenities, enhanced security systems, and improved boarding infrastructure.

Features include expanded check-in counters, advanced baggage handling systems, larger waiting lounges, and upgraded retail and dining spaces. The terminal is also equipped to handle a higher passenger footfall, in line with the growing air traffic in the region.

Boost to Northeast Connectivity

The Assam government has described the new terminal as a milestone in strengthening connectivity for the Northeast. Improved infrastructure is expected to encourage tourism, trade, and investment.

Chief Minister Sarma said the facility reflects the state’s broader push toward infrastructure-led development and aims to position Guwahati as a major aviation hub in eastern India.

With operations set to begin on February 22, passengers travelling through Guwahati can expect a more modern and streamlined airport experience in the coming weeks.
