Opposition Leaders Urge Government, Lok Sabha Speaker to Revoke Suspension of 8 MPs

Leaders of several opposition parties have urged the government and the Om Birla, Speaker of the Lok Sabha, to reconsider and revoke the suspension of eight Members of Parliament during the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament.

The suspended MPs include seven members from the Indian National Congress, along with one legislator from another opposition party. The action was taken following disruptions and protests in the Lok Sabha during recent proceedings, after which the Speaker ordered that the MPs be barred from attending the remainder of the Budget Session.

Opposition leaders have strongly criticised the decision, describing it as excessive and undemocratic. They argued that suspending MPs for the entire session effectively denies their constituencies representation in Parliament during important discussions, including debates on financial matters related to the national budget.

Several opposition parties also held meetings and consultations after the suspensions were announced. Leaders said they would collectively appeal to the government and the Speaker to withdraw the order and allow the MPs to participate in the remaining proceedings of the session.

The opposition maintained that parliamentary protests are part of democratic functioning and that disciplinary action should be proportionate. Some leaders claimed that the suspension of multiple MPs at once was intended to silence dissenting voices in the House.

On the other hand, government representatives defended the action, stating that repeated disruptions in Parliament prevent the House from functioning smoothly and delay legislative work. According to them, strict measures are sometimes necessary to maintain order and ensure that parliamentary business continues without obstruction.

The issue has added to tensions between the ruling coalition and opposition parties during the Budget Session. Political observers say the matter could become a major point of debate in the coming days as opposition parties push for the reinstatement of the suspended members.

Meanwhile, the Speaker’s office has not yet indicated whether the suspension order will be reconsidered. Until a decision is taken, the eight MPs will remain barred from attending the proceedings of the Lok Sabha for the rest of the ongoing session.
