Theft spree took place amid temporary blackout at the popular music event; police recover several stolen devices.
Gurugram:More than two dozen mobile phones were allegedly stolen during a brief power outage at the popular Sunburn music festival in Gurugram. Police have arrested 12 suspects in connection with the incident and recovered several of the stolen devices.
According to officials, the thefts occurred when a temporary power cut disrupted lighting at the event venue, creating confusion among attendees. Taking advantage of the darkness and crowd movement, a group of individuals allegedly targeted festival-goers and stole their mobile phones.
Complaints Flood In
Following the event, multiple attendees approached police to report missing phones. A preliminary inquiry revealed a pattern suggesting coordinated pickpocketing during the blackout.
Police teams deployed at the venue began scanning CCTV footage and tracking suspicious movements captured during the power disruption. Based on technical surveillance and ground intelligence, authorities identified and detained 12 suspects allegedly involved in the thefts.
Recovery of Stolen Devices
Officials confirmed that several stolen mobile phones have been recovered from the accused. Efforts are ongoing to trace and return the devices to their rightful owners. Police are also examining whether the group has been involved in similar incidents at large public gatherings in the past.
Security Measures Tightened
The incident has raised concerns about crowd management and security arrangements at large-scale events. Authorities stated that additional precautions would be recommended for future festivals, including enhanced surveillance and backup power systems to prevent such situations from being exploited.
Organisers of the Sunburn Festival have yet to issue a detailed statement on the incident. Meanwhile, police have registered a case under relevant sections related to theft and criminal conspiracy.
Investigations are ongoing to determine whether more individuals were involved and to recover the remaining stolen phones.
