Filmmaker and writer Paromita Vohra has emphasised the importance of exploring emotional experiences beyond rigid identity categories in her latest book, Love, Sex and India: The Agents of Ishq Anthology.

Speaking about the anthology, Vohra said the aim was to curate stories that reflect the complexity of human emotions, relationships, and desires, rather than limiting narratives to fixed labels such as sexual identity. She noted that the collection brings together deeply personal accounts that capture love, intimacy, confusion, vulnerability, and self-discovery in diverse ways.

“The idea was to look for stories that discuss emotional experiences, not just identity markers,” she explained, adding that many mainstream narratives tend to reduce individuals to categories, overlooking the richness of lived experiences.

The anthology is an extension of her widely known digital platform Agents of Ishq, which focuses on conversations around love, sex, and desire in contemporary India. Through this book, Vohra attempts to present voices that challenge binaries such as traditional versus modern, or conservative versus liberal.

According to her, the stories featured in the anthology avoid “easy binaries” and instead embrace contradictions and nuances. Contributors share experiences that cut across gender, sexuality, and cultural expectations, offering readers a more layered understanding of intimacy in Indian society.

Vohra also highlighted that the project aims to create a safe and open space for dialogue, encouraging readers to reflect on their own experiences without judgment. By focusing on storytelling rooted in authenticity, the anthology seeks to normalise conversations around topics that are often considered taboo.

The book has been praised for its honest and inclusive approach, adding to the growing body of literature that redefines how love and relationships are discussed in India today.
