Patna NEET Aspirant Death Case: Nitish Kumar Recommends CBI Probe

Patna | January 31, 2026

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday (January 31, 2026) recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the death of a National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) aspirant in Patna, amid mounting pressure from the victim’s family and growing public outrage.

Patna NEET Aspirant Death Case

The decision comes a day after the parents of the deceased student met Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar at his residence, alleging that the state police was attempting to hush up the case and was not conducting a fair investigation.

Allegations of Police Inaction

According to officials, the NEET aspirant was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Patna on January 11, 2026. While the police initially treated the case as an unnatural death, the family has consistently raised suspicions, demanding a thorough and impartial investigation.

The parents alleged that despite repeated requests, crucial leads were being ignored and that they were facing difficulties in getting proper answers from the local police.

“The state police is not taking the case seriously. We fear evidence is being suppressed,” a family member said after meeting the DGP.

CM Steps In Amid Pressure

Taking note of the seriousness of the allegations and public sentiment, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar urged the Centre to hand over the investigation to the CBI, stating that an independent probe would help establish the truth and ensure justice for the victim.

Senior government officials said the recommendation was made to maintain transparency and restore public confidence in the investigation.

Political and Public Reactions

The incident has sparked protests by students and civil society groups, with many demanding accountability and better safety for aspirants who come to Patna from different parts of the country to prepare for competitive examinations.

Opposition parties have also targeted the Bihar government, accusing it of failing to protect students and ensure timely justice.

Awaiting Centre’s Decision

With the State government formally recommending a CBI probe, the final decision now rests with the Union government. Meanwhile, the Bihar Police has maintained that it is cooperating fully and that all angles are being examined.

The case continues to draw attention, highlighting concerns over student safety and the pressure faced by competitive exam aspirants in major coaching hubs
