Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists Cannot Prescribe Medicines, NCAHP Clarifies in Public Notice

New Delhi: The National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) has issued a public notice reiterating that physiotherapists and occupational therapists are not authorised to prescribe medicines or administer allopathic treatment under existing laws.

In its clarification, the Commission emphasised that while physiotherapists and occupational therapists play a vital role in rehabilitation and patient care, their scope of practice does not include prescribing drugs or practicing modern medicine. The notice was issued to address confusion and prevent instances of professionals exceeding their legally defined roles.

Scope of Practice Defined

According to the NCAHP, allied and healthcare professionals must operate strictly within the framework laid down under the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions Act, 2021. The Act regulates education, training, and professional conduct of allied healthcare workers across the country.

The Commission clarified that prescribing medicines, especially allopathic drugs, is reserved for registered medical practitioners who are licensed under relevant medical laws. Physiotherapists and occupational therapists are trained in therapeutic exercises, rehabilitation techniques, and functional recovery but are not qualified to prescribe pharmacological treatments.

Warning Against Misrepresentation

The NCAHP cautioned professionals against misrepresenting their qualifications or offering services beyond their authorised scope. It stated that any violation may invite legal action or disciplinary proceedings under the provisions of the Act.

Healthcare institutions were also advised to ensure compliance with regulatory norms and avoid assigning responsibilities that fall outside the permitted scope of allied healthcare professionals.

Protecting Patient Safety

Officials noted that the clarification aims to protect patient safety and maintain professional standards within the healthcare system. By clearly defining roles, the Commission seeks to avoid confusion among patients and ensure accountability in medical treatment.

The public notice serves as a reminder that while physiotherapists and occupational therapists are integral to multidisciplinary healthcare teams, prescribing medicines and providing allopathic treatment remains the exclusive domain of qualified medical doctors.

The Commission urged stakeholders to adhere strictly to existing legal provisions and promote ethical practices within the healthcare sector.
