PIB Fact-Check Unit Busts 50 Deepfakes; Says Pakistani Handles Spreading Misinformation

The fact-check unit of the Press Information Bureau (PIB) has identified and debunked around 50 deepfake videos and manipulated posts circulating on social media platforms, many of which were allegedly shared by handles linked to Pakistani propaganda networks.

 50 Deepfakes

Officials from the PIB Fact Check unit said these deepfakes included digitally altered videos, fabricated news clips and manipulated images designed to mislead the public and spread misinformation. The content reportedly targeted sensitive topics related to national security, government policies and current events.

According to the unit, several of the misleading posts were traced to social media accounts believed to be operated by or associated with networks spreading anti-India propaganda. Authorities said these accounts attempted to amplify false narratives by sharing edited videos that appeared authentic but were actually manipulated using artificial intelligence tools.

The Press Information Bureau said its fact-check team analysed the viral content and exposed the deepfakes by comparing them with original videos and official information sources. After verification, the unit issued alerts on social media platforms, clarifying that the circulated clips were fake or misleading.

Officials warned that deepfake technology is increasingly being used to create convincing but false audio and video content, making it difficult for ordinary users to distinguish between genuine and manipulated material. They urged citizens to verify information through reliable sources before sharing it online.

The fact-check unit also said it is working closely with social media companies and government agencies to identify and remove misinformation campaigns targeting Indian audiences.

Authorities emphasised that spreading fake news and deepfakes can have serious consequences, including creating confusion among the public and damaging trust in institutions. Citizens have been advised to report suspicious content to official fact-check platforms to help curb the spread of misinformation.

The PIB said it will continue monitoring social media networks and taking steps to expose fake or misleading content in order to ensure that accurate information reaches the public.
