PM e-Bus Sewa Boost: 100 Electric Buses to Help Bhavnagar Revive Public Transport

Bhavnagar: In a major push towards sustainable urban mobility, the Saurashtra city of Bhavnagar is set to revive its long-defunct public transport system with the induction of 100 electric buses under the Centre’s PM e-Bus Sewa scheme.

PM e-Bus Sewa Boost

The city, which currently does not have an operational public bus service, has been allotted 50 electric buses in the first phase. Officials confirmed that an additional 50 buses will be deployed in the next phase, taking the total fleet to 100.

Reviving a Defunct System

Bhavnagar’s public transport service had ceased operations several years ago due to financial and operational challenges. Since then, residents have relied heavily on private vehicles, auto-rickshaws, and informal transport options for daily commuting.

With the allocation under PM e-Bus Sewa, the Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation aims to rebuild a structured and affordable public transport network, improving connectivity within the city and reducing traffic congestion.

Cleaner and Sustainable Mobility

The electric buses will operate on environmentally friendly technology, significantly lowering carbon emissions and noise pollution. Charging infrastructure is also being planned, with designated depots and charging stations to support smooth operations.

Officials said the initiative aligns with national goals of promoting clean energy and sustainable urban development, while also offering cost-effective transportation to citizens.

Routes and Operations

Authorities are currently working on route planning, focusing on high-density residential areas, commercial hubs, educational institutions, and industrial zones. The buses are expected to connect key parts of the city and improve last-mile connectivity.

The scheme follows a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, where bus procurement and maintenance are managed through central support, reducing the financial burden on local bodies.

Economic and Social Impact

The introduction of electric buses is expected to create employment opportunities for drivers, maintenance staff, and operational personnel. It will also provide a reliable commuting option for students, senior citizens, and daily wage workers.

Civic officials expressed confidence that the project will transform urban mobility in Bhavnagar, restoring an essential public service while embracing green technology.

The first batch of buses is likely to be rolled out after completion of infrastructure and operational preparations.
