📰 Press Club of India Issues Advisory on Election Reporting, Urges Media to Follow 2022 Guidelines

In view of upcoming elections and the growing concerns around misinformation and biased coverage, the Press Club of India has issued a comprehensive advisory to media organisations, calling for strict adherence to ethical standards while reporting on electoral processes.

The advisory specifically urges print media to follow the “Guidelines on Election Reporting and Norms of Journalistic Conduct-2022,” framed by the Press Council of India. These guidelines are aimed at ensuring responsible, accurate, and fair coverage during election periods.

According to the advisory, media outlets must avoid publishing unverified claims, misleading headlines, or politically motivated content that could influence voters. It emphasises that news reports should be factual, balanced, and free from sensationalism, especially when covering political parties, candidates, and campaign events.

The Press Club also highlighted the importance of distinguishing clearly between news and opinion pieces. Editorials and opinion articles must not be presented as factual reporting, and adequate disclosure should be maintained to avoid confusion among readers.

Another key focus of the advisory is on curbing the spread of fake news and misinformation, particularly in the digital age where content spreads rapidly across platforms. Media organisations have been urged to verify sources rigorously and avoid amplifying rumours or unconfirmed reports that could disrupt the democratic process.

The guidelines further stress equal and fair coverage for all political parties and candidates, ensuring that no undue advantage is given through disproportionate visibility or biased reporting. Paid news, a long-standing concern during elections, has also been flagged, with strict instructions to maintain transparency in advertising and sponsored content.

The Press Club of India noted that adherence to these norms is essential to uphold the credibility of journalism and protect the integrity of elections. It called upon editors, reporters, and publishers to act responsibly and uphold the highest standards of professional conduct.

The advisory comes as part of broader efforts to strengthen democratic processes and ensure that voters receive accurate and unbiased information ahead of casting their votes.
