Priyanka Gandhi Slams Assam CM for Dragging Gaurav Gogoi’s Family Into ‘Pakistan Link’ Allegation

Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday criticised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for allegedly dragging the family and children of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi into a “Pakistan link” controversy.

Addressing reporters during her visit to Assam, Priyanka Gandhi termed the remarks “unfortunate” and said political differences should not extend to targeting family members, especially children.

‘Keep Politics Away From Families’

Priyanka Gandhi said that while political leaders can debate and disagree strongly on policy matters, bringing family members into allegations crosses a line. She asserted that such tactics lower the standard of political discourse.

“Children and families should not be dragged into political battles,” she said, adding that democracy demands accountability and debate on issues — not personal attacks.

The Congress has accused the Chief Minister of making insinuations about Gogoi’s alleged links, which the party has dismissed as baseless and politically motivated.

Tribute to Zubeen Garg

Earlier in the day, Priyanka Gandhi paid homage to Assamese singer Zubeen Garg at his cremation ground, known as Zubeen Khetra, located in Sonapur near Guwahati.

Describing the late singer as “above politics,” she said Zubeen Garg had spread the message of love and unity throughout his life and work. She added that his contribution to Assamese culture and music transcended party lines and ideologies.

“Artists like him belong to everyone,” she said, emphasising that cultural icons should be remembered for their legacy rather than political differences.

Political Tensions in Assam

The exchange comes amid heightened political tensions in Assam, with both the ruling party and the opposition trading sharp accusations. The alleged “Pakistan link” remark has sparked debate in the state’s political circles, with Congress leaders demanding clarification and restraint.

The Assam government has maintained that its statements are based on concerns that warrant discussion, while opposition leaders argue that such rhetoric is designed to distract from governance issues.

As the controversy unfolds, it has once again highlighted the increasingly personal nature of political confrontations in the run-up to key electoral battles.
