Bhopal/Chhatarpur: A protest against the Ken-Betwa River Link Project turned violent in parts of Madhya Pradesh, prompting police to register three separate cases in connection with the unrest.

According to officials, residents from several villages gathered to voice their opposition to aspects of the river-linking project. Protesters raised multiple demands, including better compensation packages, proper rehabilitation for families likely to be displaced, and the release of Amit Bhatnagar, an AAP leader who they claim was detained during earlier demonstrations.

Demonstration Escalates

Police said the situation escalated when sections of the crowd allegedly engaged in stone pelting and attempted to block roads. Security personnel were deployed to disperse the gathering and restore order. Minor injuries were reported, though no serious casualties have been officially confirmed.

Authorities stated that adequate warnings were issued before action was taken to control the crowd. Law enforcement agencies have since increased deployment in sensitive areas to prevent further disturbances.

Key Demands of Protesters

The Ken-Betwa River Link Project, aimed at transferring surplus water from the Ken river basin to the Betwa basin, has been projected as a major irrigation and drinking water initiative. However, residents in affected regions have expressed concerns about land acquisition, displacement, and environmental impact.

Protesters have demanded enhanced compensation for acquired land, clear timelines for rehabilitation, and assurances regarding livelihood restoration.

Police Action and Cases Filed

Police confirmed that three cases have been registered against unidentified individuals for unlawful assembly, damage to public property, and other relevant offences. CCTV footage and video recordings are being examined to identify those involved in the violence.

Officials emphasized that while peaceful protest is a democratic right, any act of violence or damage to property will be dealt with strictly.

Administration’s Response

District authorities have appealed for calm and assured that grievances related to compensation and rehabilitation will be addressed through dialogue. They reiterated that the Ken-Betwa project is a national priority initiative intended to boost irrigation and water availability in drought-prone regions.

The situation remains under control, with further discussions between officials and community representatives expected in the coming days.
