Race Heats Up for Bihar’s Five Rajya Sabha Seats as RJD Enters Contest

The political battle for Bihar’s five upcoming Rajya Sabha seats has intensified after the opposition party Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) decided to enter the fray. With the elections approaching, the move has triggered fresh political calculations among parties in the state.

Opposition Strategy

The RJD is expected to seek support from its allies in the Mahagathbandhan alliance, including the Indian National Congress and Left parties such as the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation.

However, despite this potential backing, the combined strength of these parties in the Bihar Legislative Assembly is still short of the minimum votes required to comfortably secure a Rajya Sabha seat. This arithmetic has made the contest more competitive and uncertain.

NDA Holds Numerical Edge

The ruling alliance, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal (United), currently enjoys a stronger position in the state assembly. With a higher number of legislators, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is widely expected to win a majority of the five seats.

Political observers say the NDA could comfortably secure at least three seats and may even attempt to capture a fourth, depending on voting patterns and possible cross-voting.

Possibility of Strategic Moves

The RJD’s decision to field a candidate despite the numerical disadvantage suggests a strategic political move. Analysts believe the party might be hoping for cross-voting from disgruntled legislators or additional support from smaller parties and independent MLAs.

The development has added excitement to the Rajya Sabha polls, turning what seemed like a predictable contest into a closely watched political battle.

Key Test Ahead

For the RJD leadership, including party chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and senior leader Tejashwi Yadav, the election will be a crucial test of their ability to consolidate opposition support in the state.

With nominations and political negotiations underway, the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections from Bihar are expected to witness intense lobbying, alliance management, and strategic calculations in the days ahead.
