‘Rajya Mata’ Status for Cow Sparks Uproar in Rajasthan Assembly; House Adjourned Seven Times

Jaipur: The Rajasthan Legislative Assembly witnessed chaotic scenes and repeated disruptions after a demand to grant “Rajya Mata” (State Mother) status to the cow triggered a heated debate between treasury and Opposition benches.

Rajya Mata

The controversy erupted when MLA Balmukund Acharya, who is also the Mahant of the popular Hathoj Dham temple in Jaipur, raised the issue during Question Hour. Acharya sought a clear response from the government regarding its stand on conferring the symbolic status on the cow.

Minister’s Reply Sparks Discontent

Responding to the query, the concerned minister provided an official reply outlining existing measures for cow protection and welfare schemes in the state. However, Acharya expressed dissatisfaction with the answer, stating that it lacked clarity and failed to address the core of his question.

“I am not satisfied. The minister has not responded in a clear, factual manner,” Acharya said, insisting that the government explicitly state whether it intended to grant the ‘Rajya Mata’ status.

His remarks led to loud protests and counter-arguments inside the House, with members speaking over one another.

Seven Adjournments Amid Ruckus

As tempers flared, the Speaker was forced to adjourn the proceedings multiple times. In total, the Assembly was adjourned seven times during the day as legislators from both sides continued sloganeering and pressing their demands.

Opposition members accused the ruling party of attempting to divert attention from pressing governance issues, while ruling party legislators defended the demand as being rooted in cultural and religious sentiment.

Political Undertones

The demand for ‘Rajya Mata’ status carries symbolic significance and is likely to have political implications in the state, where cow protection has long been a sensitive and emotive issue.

While the government reiterated its commitment to cow welfare through existing schemes and gaushala support, it stopped short of making any formal announcement regarding the proposed status.

The day’s disruptions highlighted the sharp divisions within the Assembly and underscored how emotive cultural issues can quickly escalate into major political flashpoints.

Further discussions on the matter are expected in the coming sessions as both sides prepare to intensify their arguments.
