New Delhi: A Parliamentary panel has raised concerns over the future of the strategically important Chabahar Port project, stating that recent geopolitical developments have created uncertainty around its progress and operations.

The concerns were highlighted in the “Twelfth Report of the Committee on External Affairs (2025–26) on Demands for Grants (2026–27)”, presented in Parliament on March 17 by the Ministry of External Affairs.
⚠️ Shadow Over Strategic Project
The panel noted that evolving international developments—particularly renewed U.S. sanctions on Iran—have complicated India’s engagement with the project. These sanctions could impact investments, operations, and future expansion plans.
The report cautioned that such external pressures may lead to:
Delays in project execution
Operational and financial hurdles
Reduced strategic momentum
🌍 Why Chabahar Matters
The Chabahar Port, developed by India in Iran, holds major geopolitical importance as it provides:
A direct trade route to Afghanistan and Central Asia
Connectivity bypassing Pakistan
A gateway for regional trade and logistics
Because of this, any disruption to the project could affect India’s broader strategic and economic interests in the region.
💰 Funding and Policy Concerns
The panel’s observations come amid recent policy signals, including zero budget allocation for Chabahar in the 2026–27 Union Budget, reflecting caution due to sanctions and diplomatic sensitivities.
🤝 India’s Continued Engagement
Despite the challenges, the government has indicated that India remains engaged with stakeholders to find ways to sustain the project and mitigate the impact of sanctions.
📢 Call for Strategic Focus
The Parliamentary panel has effectively flagged the need for:
Continued diplomatic efforts
Strategic planning to safeguard investments
Alternative mechanisms to sustain operations
