Second Mountain Tunnel Breakthrough Achieved in Palghar for Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project

Palghar, Maharashtra:The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project achieved another major milestone on Tuesday with the second mountain tunnel breakthrough in Palghar district within a month, marking the third tunnel breakthrough along the ambitious Bullet Train corridor.

Second Mountain Tunnel

The breakthrough of Mountain Tunnel-6 (MT-6) took place at around 11.30 am and was attended virtually by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Palghar Member of Parliament Hemant Savara. Officials said the development reflects the accelerating pace of construction work across Maharashtra.

Spanning 454 metres in length and 14.4 metres in width, Mountain Tunnel-6 has been designed to accommodate both up and down high-speed rail tracks, forming a crucial part of the alignment in the hilly terrain of Palghar.

The latest achievement follows the successful breakthrough of Mountain Tunnel-5 near Saphale on January 2, 2026, while the first tunnel breakthrough for the entire project was recorded in September 2025 at Ghansoli in Navi Mumbai.

Authorities associated with the project said the rapid progress demonstrates the use of advanced tunnelling techniques and coordinated efforts to overcome challenging geological conditions. Once completed, the MAHSR corridor is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, boosting regional connectivity and economic development.

Construction activities across multiple stretches of the Bullet Train project are continuing at an accelerated pace, with more structural milestones expected in the coming months.
