Several Maharashtra Cities Record Temperatures Above 40°C; Rain and Thunderstorms Likely from March 17

Several cities across Maharashtra have recorded temperatures above 40°C, indicating an early intensification of summer conditions in many parts of the State. Weather officials have warned that the heatwave-like conditions could continue for the next few days before rainfall and thunderstorms are expected to bring some relief.

Temperatures

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), regions such as Vidarbha, Marathwada, Khandesh, and parts of Central Maharashtra have been experiencing unusually high temperatures. Cities in these regions have reported daytime temperatures crossing 40 degrees Celsius, causing discomfort for residents and raising concerns about heat-related health issues.

Meteorologists attribute the sharp rise in temperature to clear skies, dry winds and strong solar radiation, which have intensified daytime heat across the State. Many districts have also witnessed warm nights, preventing temperatures from dropping significantly after sunset.

However, the weather pattern is expected to change starting March 17, when parts of Maharashtra may experience rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds. The IMD has predicted that these weather conditions could continue between March 17 and March 20, particularly affecting Vidarbha, Marathwada, Khandesh and nearby areas.

Officials said the change in weather is likely due to the formation of atmospheric instability and moisture incursion from surrounding regions. Thunderstorms during this period could bring short spells of rain, lightning and wind speeds strong enough to affect local conditions.

Weather experts say the rainfall and cloud cover may temporarily reduce daytime temperatures, offering relief from the intense heat. However, they also advised people to remain cautious during thunderstorms, especially in open areas or during lightning activity.

Authorities have urged residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak afternoon hours, and follow weather advisories issued by the meteorological department.

The IMD will continue monitoring the evolving weather conditions and may issue further alerts if the intensity of thunderstorms or rainfall increases in the coming days.
