📰 Statues of Kakori Martyrs Demolished in U.P., Opposition Calls It ‘Insult’ to Freedom Fighters

A political controversy has erupted in Uttar Pradesh after statues of martyrs associated with the historic Kakori Train Action were reportedly razed during a local administrative drive, triggering strong reactions from opposition parties and civil society groups.

 Kakori Martyrs

The Kakori martyrs—revolutionaries who took part in the 1925 train action against British rule—are widely revered for their role in India’s freedom struggle. Among them were prominent figures such as Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqulla Khan, and Rajendra Lahiri, whose sacrifices are remembered across the country.

According to reports, the statues were removed or demolished as part of an alleged anti-encroachment or redevelopment exercise carried out by local authorities. However, the action has sparked outrage, with opposition leaders accusing the administration of disrespecting national heroes and undermining the legacy of the freedom movement.

Opposition parties termed the incident an “insult to freedom fighters,” demanding immediate restoration of the statues and accountability from officials involved. “Such actions hurt public sentiment and dishonour those who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s independence,” a senior opposition leader said.

Local residents and activists also expressed shock, stating that the statues held deep emotional and historical significance for the community. Some claimed that there was no prior public notice or consultation before the removal, further fueling discontent.

On the other hand, officials have maintained that the action was part of routine administrative work and not intended to disrespect any historical figure. They indicated that alternative arrangements or relocation of the statues may be considered.

The incident has now taken on political overtones, with debates intensifying over how historical memory and public heritage should be preserved during development projects.

As the controversy grows, demands for an inquiry and immediate corrective steps continue to mount, with many urging authorities to ensure that the legacy of India’s freedom fighters is treated with dignity and respect.
