A political controversy has erupted in Uttar Pradesh after statues of martyrs associated with the historic Kakori Train Action were reportedly razed during a local administrative drive, triggering strong reactions from opposition parties and civil society groups.

The Kakori martyrs—revolutionaries who took part in the 1925 train action against British rule—are widely revered for their role in India’s freedom struggle. Among them were prominent figures such as Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqulla Khan, and Rajendra Lahiri, whose sacrifices are remembered across the country.

According to reports, the statues were removed or demolished as part of an alleged anti-encroachment or redevelopment exercise carried out by local authorities.
