Bareilly Magistrate Suspension: Suspended Officer Threatens Delhi Protest From February 7 Over SC/ST Act

Bareilly/New Delhi:Former Bareilly city magistrate Alankar Agnihotri, who was recently suspended by the Uttar Pradesh government on charges of indiscipline, has announced plans to stage a protest in Delhi from February 7 if the Centre does not withdraw the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Addressing supporters and speaking to the media, Agnihotri alleged that the legislation was being misused on a large scale. He claimed that 85% of the country’s population was adversely affected by the Act and further alleged that 95% of cases registered under it were false. However, these claims have not been independently verified.

Claims and Allegations: Bareilly Magistrate Suspension Followed by Charges of SC/ST Act Misuse

Agnihotri argued that the law, which was enacted to prevent atrocities against members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, had instead become a tool for harassment. He said that the Act required urgent review and reform, asserting that it was being misapplied in many cases.

He also claimed that upper-caste organisations across the country were backing his stand and would extend support to the proposed agitation in the national capital.

Bareilly Magistrate Suspension: Government Cites Indiscipline and Upholds Official Stand

The Uttar Pradesh government suspended Agnihotri earlier this month, citing indiscipline and conduct unbecoming of a government officer. Officials have maintained that government servants are expected to uphold constitutional values and refrain from public statements or actions that could undermine social harmony.

The state administration has so far not commented on his latest announcement regarding the Delhi protest.

Political and Social Reactions

Agnihotri’s remarks and call for a nationwide protest have sparked strong reactions from social organisations and activists, particularly those representing Dalit and tribal communities, who have defended the Act as a crucial legal safeguard against discrimination and violence.

Legal experts have also pointed out that the SC/ST Act has undergone judicial scrutiny and amendments over the years to balance safeguards against misuse while ensuring protection for vulnerable communities.

Situation Being Monitored

Authorities said they are monitoring the situation closely, especially in view of the proposed protest in Delhi. Further action will depend on developments in the coming days, officials added.
