📰 Three Workers Die Cleaning Septic Tank at Raipur Hospital, Safety Lapses Trigger Outrage

A tragic incident in Raipur has sparked widespread outrage after three sanitation workers lost their lives while cleaning a septic tank at Ram Krishna Care Hospital in the Pachpedi Naka area.

Tank

According to police officials, the incident occurred when the workers entered a nearly 20-feet-deep septic tank without any protective equipment. The men reportedly suffocated due to the accumulation of toxic gases inside the confined space. One worker initially descended into the tank and collapsed, following which two others entered in an attempt to rescue him, only to meet the same fate.

Emergency teams rushed to the spot after being alerted, and the workers were pulled out and taken for medical assistance. However, doctors declared all three dead upon arrival, confirming that asphyxiation was the likely cause.

Preliminary investigations indicate serious violations of safety protocols. Authorities stated that the workers were not provided with essential gear such as oxygen masks, harnesses, or gas detectors—equipment considered mandatory for such hazardous tasks.

The incident has reignited concerns over the continuing practice of unsafe manual cleaning of septic tanks, despite strict regulations and a nationwide ban on hazardous manual scavenging. Activists and labour rights groups have condemned the negligence, demanding strict action against those responsible and stronger enforcement of safety laws.

Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to determine accountability, including whether the hospital management or contractors failed to follow safety norms. Officials also confirmed that compensation and support would be extended to the families of the deceased workers.

The tragedy has once again highlighted the urgent need for mechanised cleaning systems and better protection for sanitation workers, who continue to risk their lives performing essential but dangerous tasks.
