📰 Tragedy in Raipur: Three Sanitation Workers Die Cleaning Septic Tank at Private Hospital

A shocking incident in Raipur has sparked widespread outrage after three sanitation workers lost their lives while cleaning a septic tank at a private hospital, raising serious concerns over worker safety and illegal manual scavenging practices.

Septic Tank

The tragic mishap occurred at Ram Krishna Care Hospital, located in the Pachpedi Naka area. According to police officials, the workers had entered a nearly 20-feet-deep septic tank without any protective equipment or safety gear. During the cleaning process, they were reportedly overcome by toxic gases, leading to suffocation and death.

Eyewitnesses stated that one worker initially entered the tank and collapsed soon after. In a desperate attempt to rescue him, two others climbed down, but they too were overpowered by the hazardous fumes. All three were pulled out later and rushed for medical assistance, but doctors declared them dead on arrival.

Authorities confirmed that no safety protocols were followed during the operation. The absence of oxygen masks, harnesses, or proper ventilation points to gross negligence on the part of those responsible for assigning the task.

The incident has triggered anger among local residents and labour rights activists, who have demanded strict action against the hospital management and contractors involved. Protests were reported in the area, with calls for justice and stricter enforcement of laws banning manual scavenging.

Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to determine accountability. Officials said that those found guilty of violating safety norms and endangering lives will face legal consequences.

Despite being banned under Indian law, manual cleaning of septic tanks continues in many parts of the country, often putting the lives of sanitation workers at grave risk. This incident once again highlights the urgent need for mechanised cleaning systems and strict monitoring to ensure the safety and dignity of workers.

The state government is expected to seek a detailed report on the incident, while compensation for the victims’ families is also likely to be announced.
