Two Arrested for Racial Attack on Nagaland Woman Doctor in Gorakhpur

Two men have been arrested for allegedly assaulting and racially abusing a woman doctor from Nagaland in Gorakhpur, police said on Tuesday. The incident has sparked strong condemnation, with authorities assuring strict action against those responsible.

According to an official statement, the arrested accused have been identified as Suraj Gupta and Amrit Vishwakarma, both residents of Deoria district in Uttar Pradesh. They were taken into custody shortly after the complaint was registered.

Police said the woman, who hails from Nagaland and is working as a doctor in Gorakhpur, was allegedly targeted with racial slurs and physically assaulted by the two men.


Incident Details

Preliminary investigation suggests that the incident occurred following a verbal altercation, during which the accused allegedly made derogatory remarks about the victim’s appearance and ethnicity. The confrontation reportedly escalated, leading to physical assault.

The survivor subsequently approached the police and lodged a complaint, following which an FIR was registered under relevant sections dealing with assault, intentional insult, and provisions related to atrocities and discrimination.


Swift Police Action

Police officials stated that prompt action was taken after the matter came to light. “Both accused have been arrested. Further investigation is underway,” an officer said, adding that CCTV footage and witness statements are being examined.

Authorities have reiterated that any act of racial discrimination or violence will be dealt with firmly.


Condemnation and Call for Sensitivity

The incident has once again highlighted concerns about racial discrimination faced by people from Northeast India in other parts of the country. Civil society members and medical professionals have condemned the attack and demanded stronger awareness campaigns to promote inclusivity and respect.
