Two Contractors Booked After Death of Two Labourers Cleaning Sewer in Vadodara

Vadodara: Days after two labourers lost their lives while cleaning a sewer line in Gujarat’s Vadodara, police have registered a case against two contractors for alleged negligence and violation of safety norms.

The tragic incident occurred when the workers reportedly entered a sewer chamber to carry out cleaning work and were overcome by toxic fumes.

Despite attempts to rescue them, both labourers died due to suspected asphyxiation. The incident has once again raised serious concerns over the continued practice of manual sewer cleaning and the lack of adequate safety measures.

Vadodara Sewer Death: FIR Registered After Preliminary Probe

Following initial inquiries and mounting pressure from labour rights groups and local residents, authorities booked the two contractors responsible for assigning the work. Police officials stated that a case has been filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for causing death by negligence, along with provisions of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act.

Investigators are examining whether mandatory safety protocols—such as providing protective gear, oxygen masks, and gas detectors—were followed before sending the workers into the sewer.

Allegations of Safety Violations

Preliminary findings suggest that the labourers were allegedly made to enter the sewer without proper safety equipment. Officials are also probing whether mechanical cleaning alternatives were available but not used.

Labour activists have condemned the incident, calling it a preventable tragedy. They have demanded strict action against those responsible and better enforcement of laws banning manual scavenging.

Administration’s Response

Local civic authorities have expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and assured financial assistance as per government norms. Senior officials stated that departmental action will be initiated if any lapses are found on the part of municipal staff.

The incident has reignited debate over worker safety in urban sanitation projects, with calls for stricter monitoring and accountability to prevent such fatalities in the future.

Further investigation is underway.
