Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has appointed noted industrialist and banker Uday Suresh Kotak as the Chairman of Gujarat International Finance Tec-City Company Limited, according to an official resolution issued by the state’s Urban Development and Urban Housing Department.

The appointment places one of India’s most respected banking leaders at the helm of GIFT City, the country’s first operational smart city and international financial services centre (IFSC), located between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. The move is seen as a strategic step aimed at further strengthening GIFT City’s position as a global financial and technology hub.

Strategic Leadership for Financial Hub

Uday Kotak, founder of Kotak Mahindra Bank, brings decades of experience in banking, financial services, and capital markets. His appointment is expected to boost investor confidence and accelerate policy-driven growth initiatives within the financial district.

Officials stated that his leadership will focus on expanding international participation, enhancing regulatory frameworks, and attracting global financial institutions to set up operations within the IFSC ecosystem.

Boost to GIFT City’s Global Ambitions

GIFT City has been positioned as India’s gateway to global financial markets, offering benefits such as tax incentives, world-class infrastructure, and a unified regulatory environment under the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA). Over the years, it has attracted banking units, insurance companies, fintech firms, and stock exchanges.

With Kotak’s vast expertise in global finance and corporate governance, the state government aims to strengthen GIFT City’s competitiveness against international financial centres like Singapore and Dubai.

Government’s Vision

The Urban Development and Urban Housing Department, in its resolution, highlighted that the appointment aligns with Gujarat’s long-term vision of transforming GIFT City into a world-class financial and technology services destination.

Industry observers believe that Kotak’s appointment signals the government’s intent to bring experienced private-sector leadership into key institutional roles to fast-track growth and global integration.
