Uttam Nagar Holi Murder Case: Delhi High Court Halts Demolition of Houses of Accused

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has ordered an immediate halt to the demolition of houses belonging to the accused in the Uttam Nagar Holi murder case, providing temporary relief to their families.

The order came after petitions were filed challenging the demolition action initiated by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The petitioners argued that the civic body had begun demolition proceedings without following due legal process.

According to officials, the MCD had on March 8 demolished portions of a house belonging to one of the accused involved in the murder case. The demolition was reportedly carried out in the Uttam Nagar area following allegations that the property had illegal constructions.

However, during the hearing, the High Court questioned the timing and legality of the demolition drive. The court observed that such action must strictly follow the procedures laid down under the law and cannot be carried out arbitrarily.

The bench directed the MCD to stop any further demolition of the properties linked to the accused until the matter is examined in detail. It also sought a response from the civic body explaining the basis on which the demolition action was taken.

The case is linked to a murder incident that occurred around the Holi celebrations in Uttam Nagar, which had triggered tensions in the area. Following the incident, local authorities had taken strict action against the accused, including initiating demolition proceedings against their properties.

Lawyers representing the petitioners argued that the demolition appeared to be punitive in nature, rather than a routine action against unauthorized construction. They urged the court to protect the rights of the residents until proper legal scrutiny is completed.

Taking note of these arguments, the High Court granted interim relief and scheduled the matter for further hearing. The court stated that due process and rule of law must be followed before taking such drastic steps against any individual’s property.

Further proceedings in the case are expected in the coming days as the court reviews the legality of the demolition action taken by the civic authorities.
