Uttarakhand Mulls Registration Fee for Char Dham Yatra to Curb Fake Entries

The Uttarakhand government is considering the introduction of a registration fee for pilgrims undertaking the Char Dham Yatra, in a bid to curb fake entries and streamline crowd management during the annual pilgrimage.

Senior officials said a committee has been constituted to examine the proposal, work out the fee structure, and submit its recommendations for government approval. The move comes amid concerns over bogus registrations and misuse of the online booking system, which have posed challenges in monitoring pilgrim inflow and ensuring safety.

Authorities noted that the Char Dham Yatra — which includes pilgrimages to Kedarnath Temple, Badrinath Temple, Gangotri Temple, and Yamunotri Temple — witnesses lakhs of devotees every year. Managing the heavy footfall, particularly during peak months, requires accurate data on pilgrim numbers and advance planning for accommodation, medical aid, and security.

Officials indicated that a nominal registration fee could help discourage fake or duplicate bookings, while also generating funds to improve facilities such as sanitation, crowd control systems, disaster preparedness, and digital monitoring infrastructure.

The committee is expected to consult stakeholders, including tourism and disaster management departments, temple committees, and local authorities, before finalising its recommendations. The proposed fee, if approved, would be implemented through the existing online registration portal.

The government has emphasised that the primary objective is to ensure a safe and smooth pilgrimage experience rather than to impose a financial burden on devotees. A final decision will be taken after the committee submits its report and the proposal receives formal approval.
