Sonbhadra: Dozens of villagers in Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh staged a ‘jal satyagraha’ to protest against the prolonged drinking water crisis in the region, alleging that government promises of piped water supply remain unfulfilled even years after initial groundwork was completed.
Standing waist-deep in water as a mark of protest, villagers accused authorities of neglect and demanded immediate restoration of potable water facilities in their area.

Allegations of Incomplete Pipeline Work
According to the protesters, surveys were conducted and roads were dug up two to three years ago for laying water pipelines under a government scheme. While pipelines were reportedly installed, household tap connections have not been provided to many homes.
Residents claimed that despite repeated representations to local officials, no concrete steps have been taken to operationalise the supply system.
“Pipes were laid after digging our roads, but water has not reached our homes. We are still dependent on the river,” a villager alleged.
Forced to Use Contaminated Water
With no functional tap water connections, villagers said they are forced to collect water from a nearby river, which they claim is polluted and unsafe for consumption. Many alleged that the contaminated water has led to frequent cases of waterborne diseases, particularly among children and the elderly.
Women in the village said they walk long distances daily to fetch water, adding to their hardship.
Demand for Immediate Action
The protesters demanded:
Immediate installation of household tap connections
Regular and safe drinking water supply
Accountability for delays in project implementation
