The Chandigarh Police have arrested a 58-year-old woman with a history of multiple cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act after recovering 14.71 grams of heroin from her possession in the Maloya area of the city, officials said on Friday.

The accused, identified as Banno, a resident of the DMC area in Chandigarh, was apprehended by a police team from Maloya police station led by Station House Officer Inspector Jasbir Singh. Acting on specific inputs, the team conducted a search operation in the locality and recovered the contraband substance during checking.

Police said that an FIR has been registered under Section 21 of the NDPS Act at the Maloya police station, which deals with possession of manufactured drugs. Preliminary investigation revealed that Banno has been previously booked in several NDPS-related cases, indicating her repeated involvement in drug-related activities.

Further, the police disclosed that the accused’s sister, Bala, who is locally known as a “drug queen”, had earlier been arrested in a separate NDPS case, strengthening suspicions of an organised drug network operating in the area.

The seized heroin has been sent for forensic examination, and the accused has been produced before a court for further legal proceedings. Police said efforts are underway to trace the source of the contraband and to identify other individuals involved in the drug supply chain.

Chandigarh Police reiterated their commitment to cracking down on drug peddling and urged citizens to cooperate by sharing information related to narcotics trafficking.
