Pune: Several women and children sustained minor injuries after a stampede broke out at Shivneri Fort in Pune district during celebrations marking the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The incident occurred at the historic fort located in Junnar, where a large number of devotees and visitors had gathered to pay tribute on the occasion of Shivaji Jayanti. According to officials, overcrowding near a narrow passage allegedly led to panic after a railing reportedly gave way, triggering a sudden rush among attendees.

Eyewitnesses said that the dense crowd movement caused people to lose balance, resulting in a brief stampede-like situation. Several women and children were caught in the chaos and suffered minor injuries, including bruises and abrasions.

Local authorities and police personnel deployed at the venue quickly intervened to control the situation and disperse the crowd. The injured were immediately shifted to the nearby Junnar Government Hospital for medical treatment. Hospital officials confirmed that all injured individuals are in stable condition and no fatalities have been reported.

Every year, thousands of people visit Shivneri Fort — the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj — to participate in grand celebrations that include cultural programs, tributes, and processions. Due to the historical and emotional significance of the site, large gatherings are common on Shivaji Jayanti.

Following the incident, district officials said they are reviewing crowd management arrangements to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Additional security and barricading measures are expected to be implemented during major public events at the fort.

Authorities have appealed to citizens to cooperate with officials and follow safety guidelines during large gatherings to ensure public safety.
