BJP’s Ritu Tawde Elected Mumbai Mayor, Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Ghadi Named Deputy

Mumbai: In a significant political development, Ritu Tawde of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been elected as the new Mayor of Mumbai. Sanjay Ghadi of the Shiv Sena has been appointed as the Deputy Mayor.

Ritu Tawde

The mayoral election, held at the headquarters of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), saw Tawde secure the required majority with support from allied councillors. Her election marks a new phase in the functioning of the civic body, which governs India’s financial capital.

Focus on Smart Governance and AI

In her first address after taking charge, Mayor Tawde pledged to tackle Mumbai’s long-standing civic issues — including waterlogging, potholes, waste management, and traffic congestion — by leveraging smart technology and artificial intelligence (AI).

She said the BMC would adopt data-driven governance to improve service delivery, enhance transparency, and ensure faster grievance redressal. “We will integrate technology into urban management systems to make Mumbai more efficient and citizen-friendly,” she stated.

Crackdown on Illegal Residents

Tawde also said that the civic body would work closely with law enforcement agencies to identify Rohingya and Bangladeshi nationals allegedly living illegally in the city. She asserted that individuals found residing without valid documentation would be handed over to the police for further action in accordance with the law.

Her remarks have sparked political debate, with opposition parties calling for a humanitarian and legally balanced approach, while supporters argue that the move is aimed at maintaining law and order and ensuring proper documentation of residents.

Deputy Mayor’s Role

Deputy Mayor Sanjay Ghadi expressed support for collaborative governance, stating that the focus would remain on infrastructure development and public welfare projects. He emphasised the need for cooperation among parties to address Mumbai’s growing urban challenges.

Political Significance

The election outcome is being seen as politically significant, given Mumbai’s strategic importance in Maharashtra politics. The BMC is one of the richest municipal corporations in Asia, and control over the civic body often carries substantial administrative and political weight.

As the new leadership takes charge, residents will be watching closely to see how promised reforms translate into action on the ground.
